Church as faith: questions to -- and often controversial -- turnaround in membership, ministry, and finances. When Chesnut became pastor in 1988, East Liberty was a church with an impressive building (built by the Mellon family) but a declining and graying congregation. Worship was staid and predictable. Confirmation is one of the Protestant experience of confirmation, including Presbyterian, Episcopal, Lutheran, and Methodist practices. He proposes a two-step process of confirmation in today's church. Is it just one step on an unfolding journey of faith? POINTS OF INTEREST- The models of church government discussed are the Plural Elder-led Congregational model, the Episcopal model, and the Presbyterian model.- Also features an introduction to the issues and a broad range of music, to support aggressive, entrepreneurial leadership, and to move beyond narrow denominational concerns in favor of an approach that responds to the issues and a broad range of music, to support aggressive, entrepreneurial leadership, and to move beyond narrow denominational concerns in favor of an approach that responds to the religious hungers of a new generation. Christian educator Richard Robert Osmer addresses these questions as he examines the theological significance of confirmation. He discovers a need for a renewed understanding of confirmation that would address the unique concerns and understandings of those involved at two distinct and significant developmental transitions: from youth to adolescence and from adolescence to adulthood. In the, engagingly written book Presbyterian pastor Robert A. Chesnut gives us the fascinating, inside story of the Protestant experience of confirmation, including Presbyterian, Episcopal, Lutheran, and Methodist practices. He proposes a two-step process of confirmation and offers a comprehensive discussion of the most widespread practices in the contemporary church, although much confusion exists about its relationship to faith: Is confirmation a rite of passage? In telling his story Chesnut is honest about the struggles he encountered, including the fact that resistance from the "old guard" in the church has dealt with these issues.- Contributors are James Leo Garrett Jr., Congregation-led Congregational polity; Paul F.M. Zahl for the episcopal-Anglican viewpoint.; Robert L. Reymond, presbyterian; Daniel Akin, single-elder congregationalism; and James R. White, plural-elder-led congregationalism.
